The Natural Talent

Lost & Found Drawing by Eric in the 80’s – The ORIGINAL Meme

As a little boy, Eric enjoyed drawing cartoons, architecture and drafting. Creativity is in his nature. That helped Eric tremendously in his earlier career as a career gymnastic coach.

He could observe the athlete’s body positioning and notice any technical or biomechanical errors without the use of any camera! Eric could visually impose a mechanical analysis of the athlete’s body positioning, frame by frame. Many people were amazed by his capability.

It was 2001 when Eric decided to challenge himself with a new endeavor. Thus, it was natural for Eric to choose a new career that encompasses his talents as well as his math degree and visual arts. A career where his creativity can flourish.

Eric studied motion graphics, animation and visual effects. During his college years, he was innovative with his videography by taking two VCRs, with one connected to his cassette player’s audio, to make highlight films for his friends and gymnastics meets.

A Foot In The Door

With the aim to get into the film industry, Eric eventually realized that majoring in video editing may be a better route compared to animation. He decided to attend an Avid video editing school in Portland, Oregon.

Eric started out by working for his friend who had a production company making comedic spy camera videos.  He spent many months there working for free, just to get a chance to network and meet different working talents.

Eventually, Eric got a chance to tour Creative Domain – a film advertising company and he managed to warrant an interview and got in as a production assistant. The machine room is where he would be found busy working on labels and any other things to assist all the video editors and producers, including taking lunch orders. Despite the hectic schedule, Eric never forgets his goal – to become a video editor.

The One Opportunity

On a memorable Friday afternoon, Eric was handed a digital beta copy labeled “Spider Man 1” and was asked to digitize it so that all the video editors could work on it the following Monday.

Eric seized the opportunity, he didn’t go home nor sleep that weekend. He stayed on one of the editing bays and edited an action-packed trailer.

Early Monday morning, Eric had his video file in his hand ready to show the president of the company. He followed the president, got his coffee and then walked to his office. “Do you have a minute?” The president was busy and had Eric to go back to his desk.

"Who are you?"

Eric got back to the machine room and waited. Every second seems like hours. The phone rang, Eric was called to the President’s office. Eric handed over the tape and the president watched it, rewound it and watched again. And then again. “Who are you?” he asked.

Eric had a long chat with the president on work and non-work-related topics,  as well as his goal – to become a creative video editor. Eric resumed his PA duties after that for about a month and more. Just when he thought nothing going to come out of the meeting, the president offered him an opportunity a month later – Power Puff Girls trailer.

The condition was if the studio buys this trailer, Eric will get promoted to a video editor.

The trailer was sold and the rest is history.

Eric has edited over 1000 videos in his 17-year of video editing career. He takes pride in his works and loves to be creative and productive, just as much as he loves beach volleyball too!
